Big "blue" form.

#1402 Yucca filamentosa / flaccida Hybrid?,

This plant is grown in a bed which is unprotected during the winter.

Where did I get the plant from:
I got the plant in 1999 from Dr. Lorek in Germany, whom runs the nursery Tropengarten.

Short description of the plant:
Plant: acaulescent with several large rosettes, forming new rosettes from rhizomes. Leaves: gray green, rather stiff, 55 cm long, 3,5 cm wide around the middle, roughened surface in lines, with many fibers at the margin of the leaves. Inflorescence: pubescent, 165 cm high, paniculate with many branches up to 22 cm long. Scape 85 cm starting from well above the leaves. Flowers: pendulous (bell shaped), bright white, 5 to 7,5 cm across. Fruit dark green, very rough surface, rounded back?, 28-35 mm thick and 47-65 mm long, variously and irregularly flattened in places, as if saved off with a knife.
Seeds not know at the time of writing!

Where do I grow the plant:
I grow it a raised well drained beds, but I will try it in "normal" garden soil, when I start to propagate it.

Hardiness:
I have now grown this plant for 10 years, and it has never been damaged by either frost or winter rain.

Other notes:
I can't really figure out what this plant is, the inflorescence looks like those of Yucca filamentosa, and the fruits looks like those of Yucca flaccida? It could be a hybrid of some sort?

Hybrids:

In the summer of 2003, I tried to pollinate the flowers with pollen from different Yuccas:

Yucca hybrid #1402 [big "blue" form of Y. filamentosa ?] x filamentosa, Made by  Benny M. Jensen, Denmark in 2003, BMJ #1840, #1841
Yucca hybrid #1402 [big "blue" form of Y. filamentosa ?] x glauca, Made by  Benny M. Jensen, Denmark in 2003, BMJ #1814, #1815, #1816, #1817, #1842, #1843.

I also used the pollen from this plant to pollinate the following:

Yucca flaccida x Yucca hybrid #1402 [big "blue" form of Y. filamentosa ?], Made by  Benny M. Jensen, Denmark in 2003, BMJ #1804
Yucca glauca x Yucca hybrid #1402 [big "blue" form of Y. filamentosa ?], Made by  Benny M. Jensen, Denmark in 2003, BMJ #1818, #1844

It will be very interesting to see the outcome of the new hybrids, but I do not expect flowers in the new hybrid until 2010 at the earliest!

So far (2008) does the new hybrid-plants grow very well, and they look great. I think that the outcome of Yucca hybrid #1402 [big "blue" form of Y. filamentosa ?], may be the best of the 2003 generation hybrids.

Here is photos of some of the "children".

Again in 2008, did I use this plant for hybridization.
