HOCHSTAETTER, seed list #13 1999 (Yucca brevifolia var. herbertii

Type location:
West end of Antelope Valley, Los Angeles Co., 21 miles west of Lancaster,
California, at 900 m. elevation.
Distribution:
Extending from type location northwest along the southern and western
slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains to at least Monolith, California.
Short description of the species:
Like Yucca brevifolia ssp.
brevifolia,
and Yucca brevifolia
var.
jaegeriana
but this form forms extremely large clumps of many shoots and rosettes,
a single clump can cover an area of 800 cm in diameter, with maybe 30 or
40 trunk-like stems. In the majority of plants, the older stems are in
the middle of such croup of stems, and re from 300 to 500 cm tall. Such
stems has from 4 to 12 short branches and they frequently recline on adjacent
stems, as if too weak to stand themselves.
Seeds of #1348 Yucca brevifolia ssp. herbertii, California,
Cajon pass, 1200 m. fh 1179.76, sown 2000, but did not germinate that year,
probably as they weren't completely mature! I will try to sow them again
in 2001!
